I am Clare Pollen, a designer-maker-cyclist from Manchester. I have a background in fine art and community work.
I don’t like waste. I do like the unusual. Surrounded by junk at my local bike shop, I felt inspired to recycle the scrap into something unique. My first endeavour was making coat hooks out of some old racing bike handle bars. The result was a fun, distinctive and functional object, saved from the junk heap! From this, ’Bits of Bike’ began to evolve.
No one item made from recycled parts is the same, due to the nature of working with recycled material. Some pieces will have similarities, whilst others will be one of a kind.
Often the bike bits speak for themselves. I pick something out of the scrap heap, and I see what it could be. I like to make things by contrasting the geometric precision of an object with its rough, jagged wear and tear. (I do smooth off sharp edges!)
Bicycles especially inspire me to play with other craft and design forms too, including silk screen printing, and clothing design.
